Elaine, Artist Elaine Dilay
Briefly describe for us, your business and about your products.
I am a contemporary artist that specialized in resin art. I create large scale wall art as well as functional home wares.
What’s the story behind your shop’s name?
The most obvious business name - it states that I'm an artist and my full name!
Where in Manitoba do you make these products?
I have a home studio which occupies a large portion of my Winnipeg home. I love having a studio in my house because I often wake up early to create and also have many late nights. Its just the best for me and my family!
How does your product connect with your customer or community?
Each piece is hand made and created by myself with great attention to detail and excellence. My buyer is investing in a one of a kind piece of art!
What sparked your decision and motivated you to start becoming a maker?
I started to paint years ago and would bring my art to work and show my co-workers. I was selling my pieces from the very beginning and every sale was an opportunity to purchase more art supplies!! Eventually I was able to work with the best materials.
What do you love most about what you make and being a maker?
It is a creative outlet and therapeutic.
What’s the most difficult part about what you make?
I could write a book - lol....
What are some of the typical impressions or interactions you have at markets and what are your responses?
Most responses have been so encouraging and positive. Everyone wants to touch the resin because it is so glossy!! How can you not!
What was your biggest challenge you faced when starting your handmade business?
Having a vision in my heard and bringing it into reality. Lots of failure has helped!! Thankful for every hard lesson along the way. Any rejection seems to take me a few days to get over!
What advice would you give a maker who’s just starting out?
Be excellent at whatever you put your hand to. Take the time to get there and be super proud of what you have made!
What does it mean to you to be apart of the Made Here shop?
So honored to be in Made Here!! It is a great location and provides opportunity for more Winnipegers to shop my work. I love that local charities are involved and the sales of my home wares are making a difference in peoples lives!
